Women in the news : strengthening the voice and visibility of women in the African media’s coverage of elections, politics and governance

The handbook aims to advance women’s human rights and remove gender inequalities in Africa by helping to build the capacity of the media in Africa to analyze election and governance processes from a gender perspective. It also aims to strengthen the ability of women in public life to engage with the media and to communicate effectively on politics and governance issues through the media. Two chapters in particular deal with rights issues: “Media and Rights” and “Framing Issues from a Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Perspective”. The handbook is directed at two audiences: The media (especially journalists) and women in public life (e.g. politicians, aspiring political candidates, women in governance). It includes checklists and guidelines for the media. There are also text boxes throughout the chapters with discussion points and information that can be used to facilitate training sessions with the media, women politicians, or both groups together.
